Re: OCA Translation Platform

We need to be careful here in the message. Membership fee is not a subscription to access the code which is fully open source and free but a way to finance the association, in no way linked to the access of the code.

I agree with Pedro that this might have been used as an excuse by Transifex but we need to stick to the message.

The membership fee has been the excuse of Transifex for charging us the price (and this can happen also with CrowdIn), and this platform is also non open source, so it's not my favourite choice for now, but if the GitHub integration and the UI are great, we can consider it.

Awesome!
Their platform looks good, and has good integration support, including GitHub.

It night be worth pointing out that the OCA has membership fees.
But these are voluntary, are not subscription or usage fees, and used to fund the OCA infrastructure costs and community events.
Anyone can access, use or contribute to the OCA repositories without being paying a membership.

If we can have multiple source repos into the same CrowdIn project, I think it could be a good idea to have a single project.
I would avoid a lot of the administration overhead we currently have now.
It would also be easier to share vocabulary and translation memory between repos.
And the actual repo organization would not be relevant for the translation platform, which is a good thing in the long run.
I wonder what could be the downsides?

All,
CrowdIn has confirmed that they can support us on their free Open Source plan. I have copied their email below:

We're sorry to hear you were forced to use Transifex Enterprise. It's very strange decision, since they claim that Open Source license is free...

You won't encounter the same with Crowdin, our Open Source licenses are free forever. There are some projects with millions of words included (like Khan Academy) here.

We have only 2 main requirements: the code of software you develop should be public (you already host code on GitHub) and it shouldn't be commercially related (no monthly/yearly subscription fees or usage fees). If you fit there requirements, kindly submit the form below:
https://crowdin.com/page/open-source-project-setup-request

You also mentioned 177 projects. Do you plan to localize 177 components separately or it's amount of languages? In our current workflow, "project" is environment where localization files, translations, translators, TM, Glossary terms etc. are hosted. A project sample:
https://crowdin.com/project/crowdin

It's not a problem if you plan to create 177 projects, but I imagine it's difficult to maintain them (especially reply to translators inquiries, check translation progress), files upload/download can be automated of course. Thus I suggest you to maintain everything at least in a few projects (you may create separate directories in the individual project, for each component).

See you on Crowdin soon! :)

Martin,
Were you guys previously paying Transifex for the Odoo Enterprise translations?
Max,
CrowdIn also has the capacity - they indicated that they are the provider for a numerous amount of giant companies like Microsoft, Apache, and Reddit.
I am waiting to hear back regarding whether they can support us on the Open Source plan, or what the pricing would be if they can’t. In light of Martin’s unofficial statement, I will make sure that they are also aware that Odoo SA would be considering the switch too.

Thanks Martin for sharing the info.
Regarding Pootle, I contacted them and they host LibreOffice translation platform. Their volume is way more the OCA one. They run on 3 servers: MySQL, Pootle and one for the translation memory. I am still waiting for their requirements/quote.
Moises/Nhomar, Dave, Mohammed, do you have any info from Weblate, CrowdIn, Zanata?
Thanks.

Hello,

We have received the same request from Transifex and agreed to pay (they provide a good platform anyway, way better than what we had with Launchpad).

I, indeed, have checked weblate to see if we could easily go self-hosted. Unfortunately the answer is no.
A first test with weblate showed it was not easy to set in place (very slow and resource consuming) and that the interface was not as straightforward as Transifex.
I don't say it will not work, just that it won't be easy. I haven't checked pootle yet.
I would be interested to check big open source projects with a self hosted translation server to ask the required resources.

I believe, going from Launchpad to Transifex, we were able to reach a larger translator audience (same as going to github brought us more external developers).
I would be sad to lose it by going back to a less user-friendly platform (without counting the fact that.

All these tests were personal researches and should not be considered as an official position to leave Transifex.

Hi Frederik,
1) I haven't checked yet, but the idea is to sync with the languages available on theOdoo database creation form.
2) Let me add Martin Trigaux to this discussion.

Hi OCA, hi Maxime,

just a question and quick thought.

1.) How many languages we have to shut off to realize the 5000USD
invoice ?

2.) I wonder if Odoo S.A. would be interested in financing this "bill"
since it would be definitely better to have the same platform for all
Odoo related translations
