We are working on this module that allows you to add several documents to a partner Ans the first ones is the main one with functional fields on partner to access or set it directly.
You can define new document types with custom templating.
It is full compatible for 8.0
What so you think about it?

I'll try to take into account all of them and develop a generic module providing the basis for use cases specific to countries. If camptocamp agrees I propose to start from its code (by taking care to preserve the history) to develop this new module. What do you think of 'partner_identifiers' as module name?

It depends whether we want to be able to validate the number per country but I think it would start with kind of a l10n_xx_business_registration_number (or equivalent) with a standard function call for checking the logic for the country

In Spain we use the VAT number, but this only works for national residents, not for foreigners with passport. VAT validation works for personal IDs.
