Hi Markus,

The key difference is that Operating Units are similar to companies within a company, whereas departments are functional areas within a company. It's a more complex concept.

An Operating Unit is accountable for the Profit and Loss and Balance Sheet of his Operating Unit. And it is a decision of the company to decide what is the level of accountability of an Operating Unit.

For example, a company might decide that the Distribution Operating Unit will be accountable, on the Balance Sheet, for their own Inventory,  but not Cash or Fixed Assets. A Central Operating Unit will be in charge of the payments to suppliers or to collect money from customers, and in charge of the general company assets. 

An Operating Unit is generally accountable for:

In the Balance Sheet:
  • Accounts Receivable
  • Accounts Payable
  • Inventory - they have a dedicated warehouse that they are responsible for
In the Profit & Loss:
  • Operating Income
  • Operating Expenses

Operating Units are different from Projects in the sense that Projects can be run for multiple Operating Units, and Projects generally deal only with operating Income and Expenses.

Some hint, just for you to know: We currently working on something like
"profit center". It is more for reporting then on handling of operation.
But i don't want to make the problem more complex as it is ;)
